TK8 Backup
TK8 Backup is
a reliable, easy-to-use backup software. It takes only
a few minutes of your time to ensure that you never
lose your important files. This backup program has all
the features you expect from an up-to-date windows file
backup utility and then some. Don't buy some backup
program without testing TK8 Backup
first. The program enjoys excellent and very responsive
tech support. I did not experience this level of support
with any other program in its class.
It will protect your data from loss like
file corruptions due to computer crashes, hard disc
failures, human errors, theft, virus attacks, etc.
If you care about your information, you should use
TK8 Backup.
As to the features TK8 backup
offers direct CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW support and you can
access any other windows supported media for backups
from and to it. In addition you can backup over the
network and off-site to a FTP server. If you choose
the FTP option it first creates a file on your local
drive and then uploads it. You actually can have 2 backups
at once! The backup jobs or profiles as TK8 calls them
can be independently scheduled. The backup logs can
be written with or without color to point to any possible
problem. The report can be e-mailed to you. The program
can run a before and after tasks. That's important if
you need to stop a service you want to backup such as
MSDE or maybe a mail server.
TK8 is definitely a top choice and a bargain.
Excellent features and excellent support. The only thing
we found missing is a service mode. However, if you
need to run it as a service check out FireDaemon. It
can run most programs as service. It is easy to set
up the TK8 basic features. A novice may have some issues
or forget to set up some great features TK8Backup offers.
TK8 solves the locked file issue by offering to close
programs before the backup starts. I tried the feature
and it worked well. A shadow option would be better.
Maybe we'll see it in the next version. Again we think
it's a great program for the money.

Security
Backups can be password protected and encrypted. One
of the most secure encryption algorithms is used to
secure your data (256 bit AES). So you never have to
worry about unauthorized access to your information.
Off-site backup
You also have the option to automatically upload your
backup ZIP files to an off-site server using the built
in FTP client, so that the information is available
should a fire or burglar destroy your computer.

What our tester has to say...
 Impressively
useful and able. One of the first things I discovered
is that you do not need to be backing up files to use
the built in CD/DVD burner. It can and does function
as an independent program. However, with a computer
having more than one CD burner, the user must specify
which burner to use.
It took me a little while to figure out
that to set CD burners, FTP, and other options you have
to access the "Program Options" from the file
menu. I was looking for an options menu when they had
all been grouped into the file menu. Another feature
that is set per profile is a self extracting zip file.
This one, however, is not in the "Program Options"
window.
The program lacks a service mode or the
ability run while the program is closed . If the computer
is logged out then the program will run the backup as
soon as logged in. I was able to run the program in
the background and have it perform a scheduled backup
without me even noticing it. As for not being able to
run a service, TK8 tech support suggested "use
password protected screensaver." Of course a screensaver
does not close any program and the chances to open files
are definitly greater.
Locked files can not be backed up. The
program is designed to automatically close predefined
programs that contain locked files. This option can
be turned off by unchecking the "Terminate"
field under "Advanced Options." Other programs
that are not specified in TK8's profiles will simply
have the locked files skipped and a note made in the
log.
I found the log file to be very comprehensive
and clear. It's a plain text file that uses "*"
to draw attention to errors and has an error count on
the very last line of the log. I even found I could
manually e-mail the log or have it automatically sent
either every time or only when there was an error. Also,
there is an option to burn the log to a disc while backing
up.
