KLS Backup Professional

At first, you think all backup programs are created equal. Not so. Each has its strengths and its weaknesses. I believe, in many cases, it depends on the working environment of the programmer. Based on this assumption, the KLS programmer is probably administering several mid-size networks with a lot of "independent minds" storing their data on their local drive. In that scenario, KLS Backup Pro shines brightly with nifty features and great ideas.

Of course, KLS Backup Pro does what most Windows backup utilities do. It backs up your files and folders to a network share or to an FTP server. It can back up to a CD-R/RW, but it's not a direct process. You need to manually burn the backup files that KLS Backup creates. The lack of a service install is overcome by a scheduled "run as" setup. That allows KLS Backup to run even if you are not logged in.

Back to the plus features. KLS Backup Pro has an abundance of predefined shortcuts for applications like Outlook, Outlook Express, Explorer, FireFox, Thunderbird and even things like Yahoo messenger or ICQ and Trillian. That makes the setup really simple and very fast. Another strong plus is the sync backup to a network share. That feature comes in handy when you go on or come back from a trip and need to transfer your data to the laptop or desktop.

Another neat feature that caught my eye is the FTP backup. This program does it both ways. You can back up your FTP site to our hard drive or network. Of couse, as with others, you can back up your local data to the FTP server on the Internet. ...And there is more. It backs up your MySQL server. So, if you have a hosted Web site and are running a forum like phpBB, the decision is made for you—Get KLS Backup Pro.

As with most other Windows backup programs, KLS Backup Pro cannot do a "Bare Metal" restore. But, having backed up the user and a lot of program settings with the predefined shortcuts, it makes it easier to start from scratch compared to many other backup programs. If you're in a situation where you need to back up user computers on a network, KLS is a winner at home and in a company setting.

What our tester has to say...

I liked the program very much. I can see using it in a commercial environment not only to back up desktop computers but also for moving users to new machines. The number of predefined backup short-cuts is incredible. I was not able to test them all simply because I did not have all the programs installed on my system. This program will work very well for you in a network environment backing up from one computer to another or over the Internet via FTP. Don't bother with the demo; it's limited to 100 files or 100 megs. The only reason you want to test the program before you buy it is the CD writing. KLS Backup does not offer its own CD or DVD writing. You have to burn the CD or DVD manually with your favorite burner.

A nice and rather unique feature is the Web interface. I can see great potential in that the admin. does not need to sit in front of every machine in order to change or check something on the backup settings. Unique features should be rewarded. It shows that the company is actively interested in making the program better.

KLS Backup Personal for $24.95 is clearly designed for the home market and offers a subset of the Pro features. KLS Personal does not offer the following features found in the Pro version: Send log via e-mail, synchronize, custom restore location, archive search, thread priority, differential backup, or backup set groups. It also does not back up the following files or folders: Network, FTP, or MySQL database. The demo for KLS Personal also has all CD/DVD features completely disabled. Most features are not needed in a home setting. However, I feel full CD-R and maybe DVD-R support should be in a first class home backup program. A backup should be able to provide an off site or at least "off-machine" storage solution. Since FTP and direct CD-R support are not available, many home users have to depend on a third party packet writer. I for one do not like these packet writers.

I really like this backup program. It does everything I need. I needed the MySQL backup feature, but I started using other backup shortcuts like Outlook Express. I almost did not fool with the program because of the limited demo. You can only back up a couple hundred files with the demo.
