Handy Backup 4.0
I stumbled onto Handy Backup a while ago,
and all I can say is—IT'S GREAT! Perfect for that
laptop, your home computer or even a workstation with
files not stored on the server for whatever reason.
Don't let the low price fool you. Handy
Backup 4.0 simply does what it says, and it does it
well. And best of all, it does backup to a variety of
media including an FTP backup over the Internet. I installed
several copies for clients, and they are running like
clock work.
Handy Backup 4.0 is very simple to use
and set up. It does not have predefined shortcut icons
to back up your program files, but if you know what
you want to back up, it's not a big deal. In turn, you
get a self-supported CD backup option. It does not require
you to pre-format the CD. I really like the FTP backup
option, and I get notified via e-mail once the backup
is complete or if there was a problem.
Of course, for the low price there are a few drawbacks.
Handy Backup 4.0 does not run as a service, so you have
to be logged in as a user. But, it's OK to secure the
machine with a password protected screen saver. There
is a pro version available which offers a service mode.

A very reliable backup solution that installs
and sets up quickly. If you know what you want to back
up and do it over FTP or to CD-R, this program is simply
great. I've never seen a compatibility issue. If you
need help finding your data to back up and have a large
amount ( 700 megs +), the lack of DVD support makes
the program not as attractive as some of its competitiors.
For use as network or FTP backup, the program is solid
and works with most FTP servers. As with most low-cost
Windows backup utilities, in case of a system crash,
you will need to reinstall Windows and all the applications
before you restore the data.
