What our tester has to say...

BackUpper is far different in design from any other program I've tested. It took me a good bit of time to figure out how to create a new backup task. The program doesn't even title it as a backup task or job. I had to create a new "section" under my backup profile. I figured out that they did this for organization purposes so that it breaks down into Profiles, Groups, and the Sections as my task ended up; however, sections do not need to be in groups for the program to work.

I was unable to install BackUpper standard as a service. The ability to run it as a service via XP scheduler does exsist; however, the program had deactivated the radio button and would not allow me to select it. I do know that the scheduler does run a backup as soon as logged in in the event that a backup was missed. This feature can be set so that this does not occur if the next backup time is not that far away.

The backup log is kept at the bottom of the main window of the program manager. Every move I made was logged into that table. If I started the backup engine, or canceled a backup, or even just changed the program settings, it was logged. Anything that happened with no faults is marked with a green check and every error, even when I canceled a backup, was marked with a Red circle with a white "x" in it. The log is kept readable by the table gridlines and ordered from most recent event to oldest event.

I was not impressed with the lack of CD/DVD and FTP support. The program has no ability whatsoever to backup my files to a Disc or off-site server. It can backup to the network and to anywhere else on my computer, but what happens if the entire network has a problem? I know that it's unlikely for the whole network to fail but it would still be nice to send my information off-site or at least to a disc.

I was glad to see that the program can handle locked files such as MS outlook. The program also has the ability to postpone a backup if it finds a locked file it cannot backup. Thus it allows me to save my information and close the program so that my backup may happen. Another feature I found tied in with this, is that if I were to take too long in saving my information, and it was nearing the time for my next backup session, BackUpper would simply wait for the next scheduled backup as it would with a missed schedule.

Backupper Professional, for $95.00, offers all the features included in the Standard edition plus some new ones. Extra features include: a Remote Control feature, e-mail notifications, and use of the Windows scheduler to achive similar results as a system service. Professional also allows for an unlimited number of "Manager Installations" for servers and workstations on the network. This means that there is no limit to the number of program installations but the actual backup will only be run from a central machine via remote access to all other machines with the manager.
