Argentum Backup

Argentum Backup is a handy, small, fast, easy backup software program that lets you easily back up your documents and folders. It safely protects you from accidental deletes, overwrites and viruses. Backups are stored in Zip files and can be created both manually and automatically using the schedule.

We recommend Argentum Backup for its easy interface for novice computer users as well as most average users that want to back up their "stuff." Argentum handles the task with ease, including the backup of e-mail and e-mail settings, including Outlook Express, Outlook and Thunderbird. It can back up to a separate hard drive, a backup folder, a disc or network. If you use Windows XP, Argentum Backup uses the CD burner function in the XP operating system.

We do not see much use for the program in an office setting. The lack of an e-mail report function and inability to handle locked files may make this a system administrator's nightmare.

What our tester has to say...

I found it backs up files rather nicely and handles CD-R/RW with outside help or without. When I told the program not to use the default Windows CD burning software, the program managed to burn a CD by itself. I did try a DVD after attempting the program's built-in software and ended up without any backup happening at all. The program stated "Device not ready," and ended.

When it comes to backing up registry, the program vendor says you can do it, but I have yet to discover where that option is.

I backed up read-only files like open MS Word files, and they don't bother Argentum at all; it backs them up just fine. Locked files, however, are not so easy. Argentum encountered locked files (Outlook) and told me that some problems were found. The program reported the files as "Access Denied."

The program does have a log maintaining vague information from all backups in sequential order. The log does not include a list of files backed up or tell you what files were excluded. The log does keep all backup jobs seperated if you choose to back up multiple jobs at once, which is very easy to do on accident.

There are fully functional shortcuts making the backup jobs easier for a novice user. Although, these shortcuts may require a small amount of tweaking. I went through the e-mail and contacts shortcut and found that it was not set to backup my e-mail or shortcuts at all. The shortcut was actually setup to back up my Internet bookmarks.

The trial version is limited but still provides for an idea on how the program could work for you. The user is limited to no more than four backup jobs at any given time. A backup job must be done using the "Default Settings" that all backup jobs fall back on. The option to individualize each job's specific backup location is disabled in the trial.
