What our tester has to say...

This seemed a nice program to start with. The wizard is well done and guides you through the backup creation. Things like e-mail notification have to be set up after the wizard. The claim of doing backup to CD-R and DVD-R can only be archived by using a 3dr party packet writer. It's up to you to get and install one. On the positive side, the program can do shadow backups of locked files and can be run as a service. These are features normally found in higher priced software.

But, the real surprise came when I tried to restore a backup. First, I looked all over for a restore button. There was none to be found. I finally settled for the archive button. It showed me the default backup folder I had chosen for the program. That was it. Using Winzip I was able to access the file, and I unzipped a file which ended up in the default Winzip location and not where it originally came from.

I also was disappointed with the log file. While the setup gave every indication that colors were used to point out warnings, my logs were just simple text and opened in notepad. Overall, I think the program had potential, but halfway through the project, the programmer got run over by a truck. I will look at the next release. If the end of the next version is as good as the beginning, it could be a winner.

What the vendor has to say...

APBackup is an automatic backup tool that allows you to back up your data to local or network drives, FTP or LAN. The backup files can be stored uncompressed or in standard Zip format, with additional support for other compression formats (using plug-ins).

Here is what Scott Swedorski, the founder of Tucows.com, said about the program: "It is very rare that I see a company put so much effort into teaching a user how to use their software. It was extremely easy to learn what APBackup does and how to use it. I really pushed this application hard over the past few days and it always worked as it should."

While very straightforward, APBackup has all the features any PC user, whether a novice or a pro, might need. These include support for all storage media types (floppy, hard drive, network disk, DVD, CD-R/RW, FTP or LAN), plug-in support for any type of data compression method beyond ZIP (WinRar, ARJ or JAR), file/folder synchronization options and a brainlessly simple task scheduler.

In addition, APBackup offers several extremely handy features that most other backup software developers seem to overlook—like backing up files that are opened and being used, e-mail notification for backup results, incremental backup, multiple backup file versions or an option to run the program as a network service. Plus, APBackUp can back up multiple PCs and store that data in one place—a very convenient solution for small businesses and home offices.
